Many groups in the Charlotte region host events and opportunities open to anyone interested in getting more involved with sustainability in the community. You can find a list of upcoming events and opportunities below. This list will be updated as new events are scheduled. For nonprofit groups that host multiple events that often recur throughout the year, there is a pull-down menu with details for each group.

NC Wildlife Federation Charlotte Wildlife Stewards Events – Summer 2026

Screening: The Extraordinary Caterpillar

Date: Saturday, July 18, 1pm – 4pm

Location: Independent Picture House, Charlotte, NC

TO KICKOFF NATIONAL MOTH WEEK, join NCWF Charlotte Wildlife Stewards Chapter for a special screening of The Extraordinary Caterpillar! This powerful film reveals the essential, yet often overlooked, role caterpillars play in sustaining life on earth. Featuring leading voices like Doug Tallamy, Sam Jaffe, and David Wagner, the documentary illustrates how caterpillars are the engines of the terrestrial food web, feeding birds, supporting pollinators, and keeping ecosystems thriving. Thus, highlighting the urgent need for native plant and habitat restoration in our own yards.

Monthly Educational Programs

Monthly educational programs run from September through May and are offered in-person at Sardis Baptist Church and online. Occasionally, there will be a remote speaker, in which case the program will be online only.

Habitat for Humanity Events – Summer 2026

Youth and Young Professionals Volunteer Days

Dates: Multiple dates throughout the summer

Location: Various locations across the Charlotte Region

Looking for meaningful ways to make a difference? Habitat Charlotte Region offers a variety of volunteer opportunities for students, young adults, and youth groups. Opportunities include single-day volunteering at the ReStore, construction projects, or organizing a book drive; and ongoing opportunities, including internships and becoming a regular volunteer.

Innovation Barn Events – Summer 2026

Free Public Tour

Dates: Tuesdays at 1 pm, Fridays at 11 am, and Saturdays at 1 pm

Location: 932 Seigle Ave Charlotte, NC

Innovation Barn tours are first-come-first-served for the first 20 individuals who sign up.  On a tour of the Innovation Barn, you’ll experience firsthand how sustainability and innovation intersect to create a zero-waste future for Charlotte. The tour is approximately 45 minutes. Meet at the front desk inside the first set of glass double doors.

Circular Saturdays

Dates: Every Saturday, 11am – 4pm

Location: 932 Seigle Ave Charlotte, NC

Circular Saturdays are a great way to engage with the Innovation Barn and experience sustainability in action. Stop by to grab a coffee, explore the Barn at your own pace, or sign up for a guided tour to learn more about our circular economy initiatives. They also offer hands-on workshops where you can dive deeper into topics like upcycling, composting, and zero-waste living.

Sustain Charlotte Events – Summer 2026

Party in the Park: An Annual Celebration

Date: Saturday, July 18th, 11am – 1pm

Location: Kilborne Park, 2600 Kilborne Drive, Charlotte, NC

Join Sustain Charlotte for a drop-in cookout and summer social! This is a FREE cookout thanks to the wonderful community of Sustain Charlotte followers! There will be burgers, hot dogs, vegetarian options, chips, cake, and non-alcoholic drinks. Feel free to stop by anytime between 11:00am to 1:00pm.

Discover Charlotte

Date: Thursday, Sept 10, 6pm – 8pm

Location: TBD

Join Sustain Charlotte for a fun and eye-opening series of neighborhood walk and bike adventures! Each event spotlights a different Charlotte neighborhood, where you’ll explore local gems and hear directly from residents about what makes their community unique—and the sustainability and equity challenges they’re working to address. Along the way, connect with fellow sustainability champions, enjoy light refreshments, and learn from local experts in engaging, accessible ways that make big ideas feel practical and inspiring.

TreesCharlotte Events – Summer 2026

Between Two Oaks: Do Trees Have Agency? with Dr. Jason Newton

Date: Thursday, July 9, 6:30pm – 7:30pm

Location: Virtual

Have trees changed the course of history? How do historians give forests and trees agency in the stories they tell about the past? Dr. Jason Newton, a historian and an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Department of History at UNC Charlotte, will provide a brief introduction to the field of “environmental history” and explain how some historians center non-human nature in the narratives they construct.

Between Two Oaks Speaker Series: Keystone Trees and Soft Landings with Linda Nelson

Date: Tuesday, August 4, 6:30pm – 7:30pm

Location: Virtual

Everyone talks about planting pollinator gardens, but the real magic starts up in the trees. In this one‑hour presentation, you’ll discover how keystone trees fuel entire ecosystems and how soft landings turn ordinary yards into life-supporting landscapes. Linda Nelson is an environmental advocate dedicated to promoting native plants, sustainable landscaping, and ecological education throughout the Charlotte region. As the founder and president of the Wild Ones Charlotte Piedmont Chapter, she has helped grow a community movement that encourages the use of native plants in the landscape to support pollinators, wildlife habitats, and biodiversity.

City of Charlotte Landscape Management

National Pollinator Month Events in Charlotte

Dates: Throughout June, National Pollinator Week 2026 is June 22-28

Locations: Across Charlotte

Did you know that pollinators are more than bees? Other pollinators include butterflies, bats, birds, moths and even beetles! The work they do ensures the plants they pollinate produce the food and medicines we need to survive. The importance of pollinators can’t be overstated! As a designated Bee City USA, the City of Charlotte celebrates Pollinator Month each year with a series of events and activities designed to educate the public about the value of pollinators to our ecosystem.

Charlotte Department of Transportation Free Bicycle Skills Class Series

Dates: Multiple throughout the year, check website for dates

Location: Various locations across Charlotte or virtual

Throughout the year, CDOT hosts free bike skills classes taught by a certified instructor. Covered topics vary, but each hands-on class ends with a short group ride to practice skills.

City of Charlotte Stormwater Services Volunteer Days

Dates: Every second Saturday and last Thursday of the month

Location: Various locations across the Charlotte region

Come help us keep our surface waters pollution-free! CMSWS hosts a volunteer event twice per month, as well as some additional events throughout the year. Events include: stream cleanup, storm drain marking, and tree maintenance.

Mecklenburg County Parks & Recreation Opportunities

Dates: Multiple through the Summer

Location: Various locations across Mecklenburg County
