Green Workplace Program FAQs
Registering
Why does my unit leader need to approve my participation?
This program is focused on improving the performance of campus workplaces. Support from the unit leader acknowledges that you can work on this program during your regular hours. The leader can help gain co-worker cooperation, communicate with your unit, and meet resource needs that arise. They are likely to be the decision-makers if you recommend several options to address an issue.
I am worried my unit is too large, too small, or too irregular to participate.
We want this program to be scalable and flexible. Our support staff will recommend strategies. For large groups, we may recommend dividing the unit into a few subgroups. For small groups, we may recommend joining forces with another unit in your building.
I am a student. Can I register a department?
A paid student worker on campus should ask their supervisor. There may be other circumstances where students work (paid or unpaid) for a campus unit, such as the student government. Even in unpaid situations, look for paid staff responsible for the workplace – they can help you decide if the unit is ready to apply.
Participating
What happens during a Consultation?
Consultation is when we send a campus expert to work with your unit. It usually starts with a walk-through of your workplace, with you or your team, to gather information. For example, for the Waste Reduction Badge, the walk-through will record the waste bin numbers and locations. They will ask about your practices for storage and disposal of common items and challenging items for your unit. Then they will produce a report for you on actions the university will take (e.g. bringing your equipment up to campus standards) and suggested actions your unit can take (e.g. to educate your staff).
What is the support document?
The support document is a tool to help your staff maintain goals, best practices, and new initiatives. The format is flexible so that you can tailor it to the unit and situation.
Will our unit receive help in creating our support document?
Yes! We provide examples (e.g. memos, posters, user guides, etc.). We can review document drafts before finalizing and sharing with your staff. Our review might include tips on communicating, eliciting behavior change, aligning with university policies, etc. You can request help at any point as you develop and share your support document.
Completing the badge and beyond
How long will it take to complete the Badge?
It varies, depending on scheduling and the size and complexity of your workplace. The consultations are usually about an hour. The program does not have deadlines. We will check in periodically to offer help and encouragement.
What do we get once we finish a Badge?
Your unit’s name will be listed on our webpage, along with the badges earned. You will receive a digital badge icon to represent your accomplishments, which is suitable for posting on your website or in your email signature. Your unit may also be featured in news stories published about the program.

How long does a Badge last?
Three years. Your unit may need that time to fully implement improvements, or to evaluate effectiveness. If you are implementing new solutions and updating your support documents, let us know – it could earn an extension in your Badge status. The Office of Sustainability will contact your unit about recertifying as you approach the three-year mark.
