Events with a sustainability focus occur year-round. If you have an event idea or wish to collaborate, please email sustainability@charlotte.edu. The most concentrated and coordinated periods are celebrations of Campus Sustainability Month (October) and Earth Month (April).

Swipe Out Hunger – Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week
Date: Sunday, Nov 17 – Friday, Nov 22 (tabling 11am – 1pm Mon – Fri)
Location: Online and outside Social 704 and SoVi
The Swipe Out Hunger Program aims to provide students who are food insecure, and/or who are experiencing an emergency situation, access to healthy and well-balanced meals in our campus dining halls. To be eligible, students must be currently enrolled at UNC Charlotte.
Students can donate up to two swipes from their meal plan per semester. Swipes can be donated from Nov 17-22 via the Niner Diners Mobile Ordering app. Visit our tables in the Student Union and SoVi to donate swipes, learn how to volunteer at the pantry, or donate to the pantry.
TEDxCraverRoad Countdown
Date: Tuesday, Nov 19, 4:30pm – 6pm

This free event will examine the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals and discuss how the SDGs relate to quality education and taking action on climate change. This event is hosted by Dr. Erik Jon Byker, Dr. Adriana Medina, the GREET Center, SDG Club, and the MU Chapter of the Phi Beta Delta (PBD) Honor Society of International Scholars and is open to all. Registration is required by Friday, November 15th at 5pm
International Education Week – Welcome to Venice: Over-Tourism and Sustainability
Date: Tuesday, Nov 19, 5pm – 7pm
Location: College of Education (CoEd) room 010
View a film focused on over-tourism’s negative effects on the environment, local communities, and visitor experiences in Venice. The film illustrates the role of sustainability in preserving the environment of places like Venice that have experienced the effects of over-tourism.
how sustainability is necessary to preserve the environment for the next generations presenting the case of Venice, example that can be extended to many other places in the world currently affected by the recent phenomenon of over-tourism.
Gratitude in the Gardens
Date: Sunday, Dec 1, 3pm – 5pm
Location: Van Landingham Glen, UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens
Join Jennifer Bueno-Hutchens, a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide with the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy (ANFT), for silent, meditative walks through the Van Landingham Glen. These forest strolls will include meditative prompts around the practice of gratitude. Sessions may include meditative art materials as well.
These events are free for UNC Charlotte students, faculty, and staff but space is limited.
Nature Therapy Walk
Date: Saturday, Dec 7, 9am – 12pm
Location: Van Landingham Glen, UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens
Join Jennifer Bueno-Hutchens, a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide with the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy (ANFT), for a relaxing 2.5 to 3-hour stroll through the forest at Van Landingham Glen. Through a series of invitations, you will have an opportunity to focus on being present in the moment, deepening your connection with nature and community, and enjoying the many gifts nature has to offer.
These events are free for UNC Charlotte students, faculty, and staff but space is limited.

Charlotte Strategic Energy Action Plan Community Launch Event
Date: Thursday, Nov 21, 5:30pm – 7:30pm
Location: Change Please Cafe, Innovation Barn (932 Seigle Ave, Charlotte, NC 28205)
Join the Charlotte Office of Sustainability and Resilience as they introduce the SEAP Update project to the general public. The event will be an open house style event with a short presentation, feedback stations, and plenty of time for networking. Add your voice to the chorus of ideas to make Charlotte a more sustainable and resilient city!

Impact 704: Academy: Intro to Smart Growth (Session 1)
Date: Thursday, Nov 21, 6:00 – 8:00pm
Location: Charlotte Urban Design Center
Join Sustain Charlotte for the kick-off for the annual Impact 704 Academy! This free 3-part series (also Dec 5th & 11th) will help you build the skills, knowledge, and relationships to advocate successfully. The first session will focus on the basics of smart growth as we answer the question, “How can better land use and transportation decisions build a more sustainable community?” and will include a presentation by the Charlotte Heat Mappers about the results of a community heat mapping project.
This event is FREE but registration is required.
Network Effect: Charlotte

This free event hosted by 3BL Media will feature Business leaders from Duke Energy, Truist, Albemarle, Honeywell, NASCAR, Trane Technologies and others sharing best practices and talking about ways their companies focus on people and the planet. Attendees will also have the opportunity to deepen their networks and become part of a community that learns from one another to drive meaningful change on a local and global scale. Attendance is free, but registration is required.

Student Sustainability Summit
Date: Thursday, Oct 3, 5pm – 9pm
Location: Lucas Room, Cone 341
Join the Sustainability Office and representatives from the Student Government Association to learn about ways UNC Charlotte students can make positive change on campus! This event will provide an opportunity for attendees to meet and network with SGA representatives and administrators from departments across campus, brainstorm solutions, and work together to grow sustainability initiatives at UNC Charlotte!
Campus Beautification Day
Date: Wednesday, Oct 16, 9am – 2pm (postponed from Oct 9)
Location: Gage Undergraduate Admissions Building/Lot 8
Join us for a day of cleaning and beautifying our campus! Volunteers will assist university staff in litter pick up and beautification projects.

Crafting Joy with Sustainable Decorations Workshop
Date: Wednesday, Oct 23, 1-3pm
Location: Atkins Library Area 49 Makerspace
Drop in to make sustainable and reusable decorations for any of your upcoming celebrations. Makerspace staff will have fabric, cardboard, and other material for you to use and several decoration types to choose from. You can also bring something you’d like to upcycle or use in your creation. You’ll make decorations you will want to keep using!
