Getting THere

Evergreen Nature Preserve is located at 1336 Norland Road, Charlotte, NC 28025. It is approximately an 18-minute drive from UNC Charlotte, making it easily accessible to students who aren’t looking to travel too far from campus. Students can also take the CATS light rail system to the Charlotte Transportation Center (CTC)  and transfer to the route 9 bus until you reach Central Ave & Norland Rd and from there it is just a 12 minute walk to the preserve entrance, making the total trip around 50 minutes.

Trails And history

One of the main attractions is Evergreen’s 1.8-mile loop trail, which is accessible from the Sheffield Neighborhood Park and the Norland Road entrances. The relatively flat trail provides an opportunity for walking, running, and exploring the surrounding natural areas. The wooded path offers plenty of shade from the trees, making it a nice place to get outside and enjoy the scenery. The preserve also has open areas where visitors may observe birds, butterflies, deer, and other wildlife.

The land is also part of a region with a long Indigenous history. Before European settlers arrived, this Charlotte region was home to Indigenous peoples, including the Catawba, Sugaree, Cheraw, Wateree, and Waxhaw, who lived on and cared for the land for generations. The area’s forests and waterways supported daily life, and Indigenous trading paths connected communities throughout the region.

Recreation and Activities

The preserve offers several ways for visitors to enjoy the outdoors, including walking, running, wildlife observation and photography. The preserve also has a picnic shelter providing a place for visitors to sit and relax or enjoy a meal. Unlike larger parks with sports fields, playgrounds, and recreation fields, Evergreen focuses on a more quiet natural outdoor environment. This makes it a good spot for individuals, couples, and small groups looking for calm outdoor activity.
